Naltrexone / Revia

Naltrexone is used to treat alcoholism, by diminishing craving and the effect of alcohol. It is also used to decrease impulsivity associated with self-harm behaviors.

Proper use of this medication:

    * This medication is not addictive, and does not cause a high feeling.
    * This medication must be taken on a regular basis to be of benefit.
    * Take this medication exactly as directed. Do not take more of it and do not take it more often than prescribed. Do not miss any doses.
    * If there is a possibility you may become pregnant or breast-feed while on this medication, first consult with your physician.
    * This medication should not be discontinued without first consulting with your physician.
    * Store this medication in a cool, safe place away from the reach of children.

This medication is usually well tolerated. However, possible side effects include:

    * Dizziness: This is a fairly common side effect, which often disappears with continued use.
    * Nausea: This is a fairly common side effect, which often disappears with continued use.
    * Less common side effects may include: headache, constipation, nervousness, fatigue, insomnia, limb or abdominal pain, weight loss.
    * Please inform your physician if you have had any liver problems.

The following other medications may require dosage adjustment while taking Naltrexone:

    * Pain relievers with narcotics (Codeine, Hydrocodone, Oxycodone/Percodan, Morphine, Hydromorphone/Dilaudid, Methadone/Dolophine, Meperidine/Demerol, Buprenorphine/Buprenex, Butorphanol/Stadol, Pentazocine/Talwin, Fentanyl/Duragesic, Nalbuphine/Nubain, Propoxyphene/Darvon, etc.).
    * Dextromethorphan (found in many over-the-counter cough and cold preparations).
    * Anti-diarrhea medications (Loperamide/Imodium, Diphenoxylate/Lomotil).
    * Thioridazine/Mellaril, Disulfuram/Antabuse.
