Gabapentin / Neurontin

Gabapentin belongs to a group of medications called anticonvulsants. Anticonvulsants are used to control seizure disorders. In psychiatry Gabapentin may also be used to stabilize mood, and treat anxiety. Gabapentin may also be used to treat headache and chronic pain.

Proper use of this medication:

    * This medication is not habit-forming, and does not cause a high feeling.
    * Take this medication exactly as directed. Do not take more of it and do not take it more often than prescribed. Do not miss any doses.
    * If you do miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular dosing schedule. Do not double doses.
    * Do not drink alcohol while taking this medication.
    * If there is a possibility you may become pregnant or breast-feed while on this medication, first consult with your psychiatrist.
    * This medication should not be discontinued without first consulting with your psychiatrist. Serious symptoms may result from sudden discontinuation.
    * This medication may be taken with or without food.
    * Store this medicine in a cool, safe place away from the reach of children.

This medication is usually well-tolerated. However possible side effects include:

    * This medication may cause drowsiness. Know how you react to this medicine before driving or operating dangerous machinery.

Other possible side effects include:

    * Balance problems, dizziness, nausea, heartburn, increased appetite & weight gain, irritability, and a sense of well-being.

The following medications should not be taken without first consulting with your psychiatrist:

    * Do not take within 2 hours of an antacid.
