Donepezil / Aricept

Donepezil is used to treat dementia of Alzheimer's type.

Proper use of this medication:

    * This medication is not addictive, and does not cause a 'high' feeling.
    * Take this medication exactly as directed. Do not take more of it and do not take it more often than prescribed. Do not miss any doses.
    * If you do miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular dosing schedule. Do not double doses.
    * When taken regularly, this medication may require 6-8 weeks before the full effects are noticed.
    * Do not drink alcohol while taking this medication.
    * If there is a possibility you may become pregnant or breast-feed while on this medication, first consult with your psychiatrist. Donepezil's effect on pregnancy is unknown in humans.
    * Donepezil may be taken with or without food, and is usually taken just before bedtime.
    * This medication should not be discontinued without first consulting with your psychiatrist.
    * Store this medication in a cool, safe place away from the reach of children.

This medication is usually very well tolerated. However possible side effects include:

    * Nausea: Taking this medication with food may diminish nausea. This usually goes away with continued use.
    * Diarrhea or Constipation: High-fiber diet (whole-grain cereals and breads, plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables), plenty of fluids, and regular exercise may treat this uncommon side effect. This usually goes away with continued use.
    * Fatigue: This is uncommon, and usually goes away with continued use.
    * Dizziness: This is uncommon, and often goes away with continued use.
    * Headache: This is uncommon, usually responds to over-the counter analgesics, and goes away with continued use.
    * Loss of appetite and weight loss: This is an unusual side effect. Be sure to follow a well-balanced diet.
    * Decreased sleep: This usually goes away with continued use.
    * Though not yet reported: Donepezil could worsen asthma and difficulty urinating.
    * Other uncommon side effects include: Depressed mood, abnormal dreaming, frequent urination, muscle cramps, slow heart rate.
    * If any side effect persists or becomes intolerable, discuss this with your physician.

Please inform your physician if you have or have had in the past:

    * Asthma, Seizure disorder, Heart rhythm problem, Gastro-intestinal ulcers, Regular use of anti-inflammatory medications.

The following other medications may require dosage adjustment while taking donepezil:

    * No significant drug interactions have yet been reported with donepezil.

Potential interactions may occur with use of:

    * Carbamazepine/Tegretol, Valproic Acid/Depakene, Phenytoin/Dilantin, Dexamethasone, Rifampin, and Phenobarbital may decrease effectiveness, though this has not been clinically reported.
    * Use of Ketoconazole, Bethanechol, Quinidine, and Succinylcholine (commonly used during major surgical procedures) may increase side effects.
