Buproprion / Wellbutrin / ZybanProper Use of This Medication: * This medication is not habit-forming, and does not cause a high feeling. * This medication may take 2-3 weeks to begin working and 6-8 weeks for full effects. * Take this medicine exactly as directed. Do not take more of it and do not take it more often than prescribed. Do not miss any doses. * If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular dosing schedule. Do not take double doses. Keep doses at least 6 hours apart for the non-sustained-release preparation. * Do not drink alcohol while taking this medication, as it may interfere with its effectiveness. * If there is a possibility you may become pregnant or breast-feed while on this medication, first consult with your psychiatrist. * Advise your physician if you have ever had a seizure before starting this medication. * This medication should not be discontinued without first consulting with your psychiatrist. * Store this medication in a cool, safe area away from the reach of children. This medication is usually well-tolerated. However possible side effects include: * Dry mouth: This may go away with continued use. Chew sugarless gum, suck on sugarless candy, and drink plenty of unsweetened fluids. * Nausea and vomiting: This may cease with continued use. Taking with food may diminish the nausea. * Decreased appetite and weight loss: Contact your prescriber if these symptoms persist or are severe. * Constipation: Drink plenty of fluids. Eat raw vegetables and fruits daily. Increase fiber intake. * Headache: This side effect usually stops with continued use. The headache usually responds to over-the-counter analgesics, such as aspirin, ibuprofen, naproxen, or acetaminophen. * Difficulty sleeping: Take as early in the day as possible. * Nervousness: This may occur when beginning to take this medication or increasing the dose. It usually stops with continued use. * Anger/irritability: If this unusual side effect occurs, contact your prescriber. * Menstrual changes: Occasionally changes may occur in the menstrual cycle during long-term use. * Excessive sweating: This is unusual, related to dose, and usually temporary. * Rash/itching: Contact your prescriber if this occurs. The rash often clears by reducing or discontinuing the medication. The following medications should not be taken without first consulting with your psychiatrist: * Tricyclic Antidepressants. * Cimetidine/Tagamet, Phenobarbital, Carbamazepine/Tegretol, Warfarin/Coumadin, Phenytoin/Dilantin, Levodopa. * MAO inhibitors (special antidepressants). History of Seizures: If you have ever had a seizure or epilepsy, this may not be the best choice of medication for you. Discuss this with your prescriber before beginning buproprion. |
