Buprenorphine / Buprenex

Buprenorphine has been used to treat depression that has not responded to usual medication regimens.

Proper Use of This Medication:

     * This medication may be habit-forming, but does not cause a 'high' feeling.
     * This medication often works within several days.
     * Take this medicine exactly as directed. Do not take more of it and do not take it more often than prescribed. Do not miss any doses.
     * If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular dosing schedule. Do not take double doses.
     * Do not drink alcohol while taking this medication.
     * If there is a possibility you may become pregnant or breast-feed while on this medication, first consult with your psychiatrist.
     * This medication should not be discontinued without first consulting with your psychiatrist.
     * Store this medication in a cool, safe area away from the reach of children.

This medication is usually well-tolerated. However possible side effects include:

     * Nausea: This may cease with continued use. Taking with food may diminish the nausea.
     * Dysphoria: A few patients report generally not feeling well while taking this medication.
     * Drowsiness: A few patients may feel tired from buprenorphine.
     * Low Blood Pressure: Avoid standing from a sitting or lying position quickly.
     * Headache: Often responds to over-the-counter analgesics, such as aspirin, ibuprofen, naproxen, acetaminiphen.

The following medications should not be taken without first consulting with your psychiatrist:

     * Barbiturates, benzodiazepines.
